Thanks for this I am trying it out myself on my TE! I dont use outlook thouigh. Also I am trying to have a web browser work direct to the internet via the USB cable. So far I have downloaded from all the links you listed. I used the SD card (from my camera) to load mp3 files (into AUDIO folder)for the realplayer - very quiet but loud with earplugs. For opera u need the no longer available from Palm JVM software and that was really hard to find. Have not found Blazer though.

@Kristine, if you follow the "Before I began" instructions in my post, that tells you what I did to make everything work. I had no problems with the 4.1.4 software I downloaded from Palm's site and don't know why you can't run it properly. I suspect that you need to install the patches I mention: the Palm Outlook Conduit Updater (so you can interface with Outlook) and the Palm Tungsten E SDIO Update. Palm has a list of recommended updates <a href="http://kb.palm.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,kb=PalmSupportKB,t=home,varset=fn:tungsten,varset=mn:e,varset=cn:unlocked,d=AF9BE236641C4CDEBED672E8976380B4,question=ref(q_activetab):str(home),varset=strDeviceScope:tungstene" rel="nofollow">here</a>.

There are two other checks I'd make. First, I would turn off any antivirus or firewall software running in the background, and I'd shut down all programs. Second, before attempting to initiate a hotsync, I'd ensure that the HotSync Manager is actually running (that's the red-and-blue arrow icon in your tray). You need to sync to Outlook, so make sure Outlook is also running.

Be sure you set up your Custom fields in the HotSync Manager so that Handheld Overwrites Desktop. To do this, right-click the HotSync Manager tray icon, select Custom, highlight the particular item to edit, and click Change. You have to do this manually for every single setting.

@Albert: I had to load ActiveSync to make TCPMP 0.72 RC1 work, but I did it simultaneously with a couple other things related to an encoder that I have since decided not to use, and I'm not sure I really needed it. If you can make TCPMP play videos without having to install it, then go for it! But it doesn't seem to hurt anything if you install it, and quick research implied that I somehow needed it.

Re. the Palm OS: Sorry, I didn't realizse it was a JVM; my bad! I'll remove the link. I seriously can't find where to DL this Palm OS. Palm's site still doesn't hit on a search to DL this OS, so apparently it's not available except on the CDs you get with the product. I'd e-mail Palm's support and ask them about it.

Also, the link for the Palm OS 5.2.1 leads to a Java Virtual Machine file. Is that correct file? Thanks for your help.

Hello, Karen. Thanks for this tutorial; I've been meaning to modify the TE just like you. I have one question regarding video conversion. What is the ActiveSynce 4.5 for and how do I use it? It seemed a little complicated.

@Lance: I'm running Palm OS v.5.2.1. I notice that Palm just redid their Web site and broke a bunch of links. I'm having a super hard time navigating their site, and Google isn't hitting anything yet. You may have better luck searching in a few days' time.

Start your research <a href="http://kb.palm.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=278,E=0000000000211326679,K=6058,Sxi=3,t=downloads,Question=Ref(q_activetab):str(downloads)" rel="nofollow">here</a> at Palm Tungsten E Support. (If you don't have a TE, then choose the correct platform.) Palm OS isn't a choice among the downloads, but an update to <a href="http://kb.palm.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,kb=PalmSupportKB,t=ooccase,case=obj(37014)" rel="nofollow">Palm Desktop 4.1.2</a> is. I don't know whether an upgrade to the latter results in an upgrade to the former.

Sorry I can't be of more help! Palm now has free, live chat so you might ask there.

By the way, are you familiar with Manybooks.net? They have over 22,000 books, mostly public domain but some modern, in plenty of formats. I'm pretty sure palm pdb is one of them.

re your additional comments about converting pdfs: the conversions seem to vary drastically and can be good or really terrible. I think it's related to how the pdf is made in the first place, and the tool used to convert too. But using the one tool I use, I still get all kinds of random results, so the creation of the pdf is the only factor in play there. There are just so many pdf making tools and so many word processors being used to create the files going into the pdfs. Too many ways people go about creating the look they want.

I wish people would stop with the pdfs and post the entire book as a CLEAN html instead. I'm not holding my breath. Pdf is really popular.
